Junior Cricket

Welcome note to Young Players

Shinfield Cricket Club welcomes boys and girls for all abilities between the ages 5-18. Shinfield Cricket Club provides a FRIENDLY, FUN, SAFE, FAMILY environment to nurture young cricketers with particular emphasis on developing core cricketing skills, a respectful but competitive sporting attitude and a PASSION FOR CRICKET.

Shinfield Cricket Club was founded in 1890 and has played cricket in the historical village of Shinfield ever since. The Club remains the focus for cricket within Shinfield and the surrounding areas and benefits from a large catchment area which includes Reading and the villages and growing communities to the south.

Shinfield village has been subject to significant growth and redevelopment over recent years with many more new homes under construction. The Club plays an important role within the Shinfield community and welcomes those new to the area as well as those with more longstanding connections.

The Club is committed to making the Junior Section a friendly, safe and enjoyable environment and encourages participation from all ages, genders and ability. The Club, its coaches and volunteers are passionate about cricket and aims to instil the same passion in its junior members.

The Club’s Junior Section aims to equip its young cricketers with confidence and the key skills needed for future participation in adult cricket in the years ahead. The Club encourages its adult teams to select junior members for participation in adult fixtures as part of the pathway from junior to adult cricket.

The Club pays particular attention to developing a sense of fairness, supportiveness and a respectful sportsmanlike attitude within its young cricketers. We hope this will prepare them well for their future cricketing careers (wherever that may take them) as well as life generally.

The club welfare officer and coaches are complied with ECB developed 'Safe Hands' programme. This is also incorporated into Club accreditation program 'ECB Clubmark'. The designated coaches are DBS certified, have undergone SYC - Safeguarding Young Cricketers training and certification course. Club ensures the interaction between players, coaches and volunteers involve are aware of these policies and procedures and understand their importance.

About Shinfield Cricket Club Coaching Approach

The Club’s coaching is delivered by a mixture of professional ECB qualified coaches and parent volunteers. The Club hosts winter indoor training sessions from January as well as outdoor summer training from April.

Experienced coaching provider Supersportz has been selected by the Club as its principle coaching partner for 2019. See www.supersportz.co.uk for more information. The Club also has links with other ECB qualified coaches for those members who require 1-2-1 coaching.

The Club encourages participation in competitive fixtures.

In 2018, the club entered teams into the Berkshire youth leagues at U9 (x2), U11, U13 and U15.

Friendly fixtures and inter-club games are also arranged to ensure that vital match experience is given to as many players as possible.

The Club also participates in a range of tournaments throughout the season.

The Club encourages its junior members to attend Berkshire County Cricket trials and the Club regularly nominates junior members to attend trials across all age ranges. In 2018, more than 20 junior members attended Country trials of which 12 made it passed the first round of Country selection, eight of which were from the Club’s U9 section, more than any other Club in Berkshire within that age group.
